Sow Productivity (PSY)

Pigs weaned per sow per year. It is the number that separates a piggery from a pet, and almost nothing written in Tagalog explains where it comes from.

Born alive, not total born. A stillborn piglet never weans.

Of the ones born alive, how many you lose before weaning. Crushing is usually the biggest slice.

How long they stay on her.

The empty days. This is the one you control week to week, and the one nobody counts.

What one weanling fetches, so the year has a peso figure on it.

Almost everybody trying to raise PSY reaches for a bigger litter. The arithmetic says otherwise: 114 days of gestation are fixed and the nursing period is a deliberate trade, so the only part of the cycle you can actually shorten is the empty days between weaning and the next service. Those days are worth more than a piglet a litter, and they are the ones nobody writes down. Read full disclaimer .
